Inspired by the success of our Cape Town Design Centre, we recently opened our new Joburg Showroom.
Our annual competition, for Inscape students which challenges them to reuse our Belgotex Floors products, as a creative and sustainable tool in design.
This year, the idea of the project was to re-invent objects that will simplify our future.
Over the 5 days, students had to conceptualise, design and create products using waste material provided by us, at Belgotex Floors. There were many great designs, and 3 of them caught the judges attention and were chosen as the top 3.
These are the results from Inscape's Pretoria Campus:
Winners of the aesthetic category
Carat, is a play on the terms carat and carrot - bringing together the extravagance of luxury and the simplicity of basic food. Their need to reflect their values inspired them to create the jacket which could pass well as a luxury item of clothing, but was still as functional and simple.
The Carat Coat is a woven thigh length coat which has a dual function as a backpack.
The group used the yarn material to weave the jacket panels and produce a warm and beautiful coat, durable enough to serve a second function as a bag. The coat can be transformed using a concealed button, passing easily, either a jacket or a coat.
The beauty of the jacket is highlighted by its unisex nature - lending the neutral tones of the yarn to added texture and fullness to any fashionable outfit.
Both the durability and aesthetic of the jacket are appreciated by younger generations who now desire products with function and form - not only as an economic advantage, but also as a socially and environmentally conscious group of consumers.
Ethe, is a gaming term that is a magical potion that brings energy and health.
"Ethe" is in the ground to symbolise that the company value the rules and principles of design but are bringing new life, a spark, shown by the motherboard that brings life to a tree.
This product is an adjustable shoe called the Flexi Shoe for children aged 2-6 years of age that "grows" as the feet grow to eliminate the need for constantly buying new shoes.
Children's growing feet are the inspiration behind the Flexi shoe. Feet between 2 and 6 years have huge growth spurts, which means parents always have to buy new shoes to keep up. This can be frustrating for the average parent but add a lack of funds into the equation and it becomes nearly impossible for the under privileged to keep up. Research reveals that around 63% of children in South Africa live in poverty. This means that 63% of children are either wearing ill-fitting shoes or no shoes at all. With every great design comes challenges, the main challenge in making the shoe was getting the sole at the front to be thin enough to be able to bend and stay in place with the lacing system. The Flexi shoe is eco-friendly, stylish and cheaper to make.
Potholes are everywhere and a problem in the society, it was a problem we identified and wanted to solve. They damage cars but not only that, they are the cause of many road accidents.
The Pothole solution is a mixed of waste carpet material and liquid tar, but the hero ingredient being the waste material. Melting the two, creates a liquid mixture that dries up after being poured in the whole on the road. This is a temporary solution that we developed as a group hoping to find a permanent solution in future by compiling more research with experts in their field.
Well done to all our young and upcoming Inscape designers!

Types Of Yarn – Polyethylene
With our monofilament and fibrillated polyethylene yarns our colour pigments are locked into the molecular structure of the fibre. This ensures that we have permanent and uniform colour saturation. The yarn is also softer with less abrasion characteristics and has realistic looking grass blades.
Our yarns are produced using global trends in colour, shape and texture. This ensures that our products are in line with world standards. All products except DIY Turf (polypropylene) are constructed using Polyethylene yarns.
Types Of Products – Non-Infill & Infill
Within the landscape range we have non infill products and infill products. Non infill products need to be rolled out, shaped and glued to the necessary substrate.
Infill products need to be rolled out, shaped and then a 80 % round 0.8mm – 1.6 mm Dry Silica sand applied and brushed into the carpet. The edges are then glued to the necessary substrate.
